My Los Angeles organizing colleague Deborah Kawashima, was recently quoted in an Associated Press article on how organizing is all about making decisions.
Deborah and another colleague formed "NAPO in the Schools", a group of professional organizers who volunteer their time to go into local Los Angeles elementary schools to teach children the fundamentals of organization. The program is a complete success. What was first a local Los Angeles program has now moved to national, with Kawashima heading the show.
In the AP article, Deborah was quoted:
''We teach the kids the concept of sorting,'' said Deborah Kawashima, an organizer who volunteers through the NAPO program in the Los Angeles public schools... 'Ninety-six percent of organizing is decision-making,'' Kawashima said."
Another interesting quote came from another contributor:
"It is teaching your children that what's most important is the relationship you have on a day-to-day basis. Those material things they [children own] could go up in flames in a fire or something, but the relationship [with their friends and family] is still going to be there."
There is more in the article. Check out "Being organized is a skill that can be learned, pros say", in the Arizona Republic.
