Last Monday, two-dozen of our local, Los Angeles Professional Organizing colleagues spent 8-hours organizing the administrative and storage facilities of American Cinematheque in Hollywood. Over $13,000 worth of labor was contributed as well as sponsorships from 1-800-Got Junk (truck pictured above) and Esselte, who donated rubbish hauling services, and office supplies, respectively.
Our company, OrganizingLA and John Trosko (pictured above,) were particularly excited because we've been "organizing" or volunteering at the Cinematheque for 12 years. The Cinematheque's application for Go-Month was accepted to receive the pro-bono day of organizing. Chris McKenry, NAPO-LA Chapter President says:
"Identifying clutter and helping clients make tough decisions is always the first step in getting organized. In most businesses, 80% of information filed is never again seen. We are here to honor the American Cinematheque's contribution to the City of Los Angeles and to show businesses, and non-profits, the importance and value of systems, and group organizing."
We can't agree more. The time taken off from "business," is returned in increased productivity. We were able to transform the name of the Cinematheque's storage dungeon from "pit" to "Shangri la" in just one day.
Past non-profits who have benefited in the "Go Month" (or Get Organized Month) organizing events in Los Angeles have included the offices of the National Council of Jewish Women, Project Angel Food, and Habitat for Humanity.
American Cinematheque (AC) owns and operates the 1922 Egyptian Theater in Hollywood (pictured, right) and the 1940 Aero Theater in Santa Monica.
Created in 1981 to honor and promote America's indigenous art form -- the Moving Picture, AC's goal is to present a full range of film and video, not otherwise available to the widest possible audience. AC established a forum for an on-going dialog between filmmakers and film-goers and provides a high profile exhibition facility for other independent film and video organizations, encouraging and supporting new talent by creating a showcase for their work.
