  • Los Angeles Seniors: Downsizing, Organizing, Handicap Remodeling or Relocating

    Betty White

Actress Betty White is an extraordinary example of growing older and more elegant in Hollywood. But what if having your own harem is not quite your style yet you still want to be surrounded by the things you love, on your own terms?

When Robert and Anne bought their sprawling San Fernando Valley family home thirty years ago, their plan was to live through retirement in this home.

They had furnished their home with refurbished antiques acquired from their many trips together. It was one of their cherished antique coffee tables that Robert tripped over, breaking his hip.  Now with his return from the hospital in a wheelchair, the overwhelming task of making their home accessible for Robert’s wheelchair and safe for both of them faced Anne.

Remodeling for wheelchair access, clearing clutter, managing paper files, organizing home furnishings and daily living items or downsizing and relocating to a smaller living area are monumental tasks that are many times thrust on senior home owners.  Sometimes the need to do this is brought on by injury or age related illness. Home and yard maintenance can become a daunting chore for even the healthiest of seniors, requiring them to make a downsizing decision.

There is a large and growing industry of specialists who understand these challenges of elderly homeowners and are ready and willing to help with remodeling, organizing or the sale of the home and with the move to a new location.

A professional organizer provides skills in making the home safe and manageable. Relocating furniture, removing hazards such as electrical cords, throw rugs, heavy objects on shelves that might fall are some of the ways they make a home more senior friendly.  Our company, OrganizingLA, specializes in helping Los Angeles-area seniors part with items that clutter or have no valued use, so to make rooms less crowded or to make ready for a move to a smaller living space.

Handicap remodeling services and senior safety services offer help in adding wheelchair ramps and widening doorways. Bathrooms are made more accessible and safe, with hand rails, walk-in bath facilities and easier access to toilets.

If moving to a smaller retirement home or care facility is the best solution there is another senior specialty provider to call on called a Seniors Real Estate Specialist.

The Senior Real Estate Specialist concentrates more on a complete service package for the sale of the property and/or the purchase of a new living arrangement. The specialist also arranges for the services of a relocation specialist or Senior Move Manager to provide a complete, stress-free package for the elderly homeowner.

A move often requires downsizing and getting rid of a tremendous number of acquired possessions. The relocation specialist or Senior Move Manager, as they are often called, will typically provide a turnkey operation that includes assessing and identifying items to keep, arranging for auction or other disposal, cleaning the home, moving the belongings and setting up the new residence. The manager may also work closely with a real estate agent to arrange for the sale of the home and may also be involved in the financial transactions necessary to move into a new living arrangement.

All the help available to seniors may in itself be overwhelming.  How do seniors choose the right service provider for their needs?  How do they know they will hire someone qualified, responsible and honest?  Area Agencies on Aging and State Better Business Bureaus are good resources to check out available service providers.

Family, friends and religious leaders can be valuable resources to seniors in referring service providers and helping to manage the hiring and supervision. We are also here to help.

The National Care Planning Council’s website www.longtermcarelink.net provides educational articles and information on eldercare providers throughout the nation including Southern California.

  • Los Angeles Clothing Resale Guide

    Crossroadstradingcompany

Consulting with our Los Angeles professional organizing, closet and wardrobe clients we invariably mention resale.

Good for you, good for the environment.  Bad if you have elevated expectations about the current retail value of that Chanel purse you bought 20 years ago.

Sunday's Los Angeles Times has a wonderful article on cleaning out and cleaning up when you redo your fall wardrobe.  They have a great listing of resale shops in the city.  Some we use all the time with clients, or (guilty pleasure here) for ourselves.

Crossroads Trading Company:  24-store national chain with 5 LA locations.  Specializes in contemporary classically styled pieces for a diverse clientele of bankers, punk rockers and everyone in between.  Styles must be current (how annoying).  We've written about Crossroads before here.

Wasteland:  Melrose Avenue most "fashiony" well-edited selections of things that looked like they just came off the runway.  This is our favorite store in LA for resale.  Two locations.

Buffalo Exchange:  Think Crossroads but more Gap– and located on La Brea.  Don't bring your formal wear into this store.  They love slim-fitting men's suit and flat-front pants for men.  Skinny shirt for women.

Squaresville:  In Los Feliz, has a "killer" selection of "east side fashion" like t-shirts, high-wasted denim.  Nothing current, think 70's, 80's and 90's.

Dee Lux:  Orange County resale, for hipsters, college kids.  Take your native American-inspired t-shirts, cowboy boots, flat leather shoes, skinny denim by True Religion and Diesel.

  • Los Angeles USPS Heads Sexy Pilot Program For Recycling Electronics

    Santa_monica_beach

Could recycling ever become a day at the beach?

The United States Postal Service last month began a pilot program for USPS customers to recycle their small small electronics and inkjet cartridges by mailing them free of charge.

Los Angeles is on the short list of cities participating in the program called "Mail Back."  Designed to help consumers make more environmentally friendly choices, the mail back program includes free envelopes inside Post Offices to mail back inkjet cartridges, PDAs, Blackberries, digital cameras, iPods and MP3 players, free of charge with no postage due.

Clover Technologies Group is paying for the postage, and re-manufacturing the products, including refurbishing, reselling or breaking them down further for recycling. It all depends on the type of part, quality and age.

Usps_2In addition to Los Angeles, the program is set for Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Diego.  More cities to follow in the fall of 2008 if success is met.

Could this be a big break for the American consumer wanting to recycle but finds it too difficult?  Will the infamous USPS, known for its award-winning customer service, be diligent in stocking the supply cabinets inside each and every store?  Sometimes we can’t even find envelopes for Express Mail.  Well, we’ll all soon find out.

What do you think of this program?  Would you drop by your local post office to mail ink jet cartridges?

  • Jeff Lewis of Flipping Out – Flipping Homes with Perfection. But Is His Perfection a Gift to the Organizing Industry?

    Jeff_lewis

The New York Times may call him a delusional jerk, but has Jeff Lewis been a gift to the organization industry?

Bravo_tv_realty_television_2Jeff Lewis (pictured left) of Bravo TV’s Flipping Out, is just so much fun.  He’s crazy, and obsessively compulsive, and just the kind of person we love to hate.

But one thing for sure (putting aside everyone’s fixation on his so-called botox injections), Jeff Lewis is a model for ultra-organization.  Even if his needs seem over the top, he gives us all knowledge that being organized takes time, maintenance and person-power.  You need more help when your home is bigger, less when it’s smaller.  So keep it simple.  I think Americans need to see OCD extremes, so they know how they fit-in.  Don’t you agree?

His open houses showcase snippets of potential clients whispering how perfect his closets are organized.  Lewis’s hijinks are highly dramatic when his contractors, real estate agents, plumbers, sexy assistants and sub-contractor are nudged to save $25.  During the final episode Lewis appeared to go ballistic when the garage door contractors neglected to remove stickers off the doors (we agree with him.)  And the stakes are high, he can’t let his properties stay on the market for too long.  All of this is a rush that feeds on itself.

We were working in the Hollywood Hills two weeks ago.  A marketing flyer appeared on the steps going up to the house– from Boni Bryant– Lewis’ Los Feliz Realtor.  The flyer showcased Lewis’s for-sale homes, including Ben Lomond (pictured above) and Valley Oak properties.

The show seems to be such a big hit, but why are the houses still for sale?

  • Organizing Emergency: What Do I Do With 1990’s Business Suits?

    Garment_rack_1

"During the Holidays I took your advise and I cleaned out my clothes closet.

What I have left are some very nice Nordstrom business suits.  Brands include Nordstrom Entier, Garfield & Marks and some Chico’s clothes.  All are in great condition but the women’s suits are from the mid-to-late 1990’s.

Do you have a recommendation for a Los Angeles consignment store that may benefit from my closet therapy?  Signed– Dated Darling"

    Dear Dated Darhling,

We think we can give you some advise, but you may not like what we have to say.
