Newell-Rubbermaid Reports 4Q Net Income Up 33-Percent

Large companies are cashing-in with America’s large fascination with organization, and products that help.

Net income for Newell Rubbermaid, global marketer of consumer and commercial products, climbed 33-percent for the period ending December 31, 2006. For all of 2006, net income as reported was $385 million, up from $251.3 million for 2005. These numbers include the cleaning, organization and decor segment and results were released January 30th.

Mark Ketchum, Newell Rubbermaid’s president and chief executive officer, attributed the improvement to the company’s strategy of focusing on higher margin products and optimizing its portfolio of companies.

Organizing Paperwork with NeatReceipts (Martha Stewart How-To Video)

Ah, the thought of organizing bookkeeping and reimbursements.

I remember my days at Disney, when someone wouldn’t get their expense reimbursement approved if all the "i’s" weren’t dotted, and "t’s" tee’d. I learned how to tape receipts on four sides so the paper wouldn’t get caught in the photocopy machine. I learned how to circle dates, stores, write how’s and why’s and keep copies of all materials that we sent to accounting on the second floor. It was a long-learning experience, not just in organization, but in learning to respond to a bookkeeper’s need for paper perfection– or else. Luckily Disney introduced SAP and things got much easier, in a way.

Those Disney days are over, and I am also happy to say, the days (and I mean days) of receipts that can accompany a big professional organizing or relocation job. Because our company has discovered NeatReceipts, through a techno-loving client.

Stair Baskets Help You Corral the Clutter

We’ve heard that the road to clutter is paved with good intentions.

If you’re working yourself away from clutter, you may hit a state of organizing euphoria, which people tell us is a kind of "Heaven."

Since organizing Heaven is above, and you need babysteps to get there, maybe you can be efficient and take some stuff up with you and put it back where it belongs?

To that end, we’ve put together some stair step basket ideas we’ve researched recently for a client. All have interesting qualities, and come in a variety of modern and cutely styles. So, take advantage of the time we spent and get inspired. These baskets, and the right habits, can corral the stuff you need to bring upstairs, to your second floor, and organized Heaven.

Artful Organizing For Your Socks, Fruit and Keys. Are We Nuts?

This may seem like a canned response to clutter, and it is.

Fabulously Green has a great post on using recycled paint cans as the answer to organizing your home, or office. Originally designed by GodoLab, the Cesaria Evora Storage Unit is composed of several metal cans hot glued together to form different shapes or clusters.

Use your clever work as artful organizing; to hold socks, underwear, fruit, keys, or any other small items.

The artist tells us that the piece is not for sale, but you can make your own easily. This DIY idea may be a fun indoor project this winter.

We’re definitely adding this item to our organizing expert’s resources list. It’s a "can" do thing for us!

Hotel Boxes – The Next Wave of Shoe Storage?
A 10-foot tall tower of organized clutter?

San Francisco Professional Organizer Jeri Dansky noted today on her blog (click here to see Jeri’s blog) a fun article in the SF Chronicle about the next wave of shoe organizers.

The chic "Hotel Boxes" come in a variety of colors including "French Miami," "Snow Queen," "White Blonde" and "Caberet," (pictured, left). They’re from Denmark, come unassembled in plastic folio, and they stack up to 10′ high. You can use them for shoes, small electronics, cosmetics, etc. We love that they keep dust out, a big problem.

Lilian Adler and Soren Berg, the makers, claim the boxes have superman strength, strong enough to use as a side table.

For $25 bucks, they’re an investment, and we can definitely use them with some fashionista clients here in Los Angeles. But knock-offs are sure to happen, probably with less quality and cheap materials. So grab an original now.

Martha Stewart Tips for Getting Organized – Orange County Register

Saturday’s Orange County Register printed some of Martha Stewart’s terrific storage strategies in a coat closet, car trunk, under the bed, medicine cabinet and broom closet.

The Los Angeles-area based newspaper also included junk drawer tips, which were our favorite:

"Use wooden boxes to divide and conquer a drawerful of odds and ends. Measure the inside of your drawer, and cut a piece of kraft paper to this size; note the drawer’s depth.

Bring the paper to a home store that sells wooden drawer organizers. Place different-size boxes on top of the paper, covering most of its surface. If there’s room, add lidded spice canisters, which are ideal for small items, such as buttons and tacks.

Arrange the containers in your drawer, using them to keep like items together."
