  • Can Decluttering and Home Staging Raise The Value Of Your Los Angeles Home?

    Los Angeles home for sale

Realtors recommend decluttering your home to bring maximum value from potential buyers.

We've just completed a large Los Angeles decluttering project and was asked to stage the house with the furniture and decor the clients already owned so that the home could be listed for sale. With the plan in mind and some muscle, we started reworking furniture, art, accessories and decor so that potential clients could envision themselves living in the house.

What did we do to make the home more welcoming?

  • Jeff Lewis of Flipping Out – Flipping Homes with Perfection. But Is His Perfection a Gift to the Organizing Industry?

    Jeff_lewis

The New York Times may call him a delusional jerk, but has Jeff Lewis been a gift to the organization industry?

Bravo_tv_realty_television_2Jeff Lewis (pictured left) of Bravo TV’s Flipping Out, is just so much fun.  He’s crazy, and obsessively compulsive, and just the kind of person we love to hate.

But one thing for sure (putting aside everyone’s fixation on his so-called botox injections), Jeff Lewis is a model for ultra-organization.  Even if his needs seem over the top, he gives us all knowledge that being organized takes time, maintenance and person-power.  You need more help when your home is bigger, less when it’s smaller.  So keep it simple.  I think Americans need to see OCD extremes, so they know how they fit-in.  Don’t you agree?

His open houses showcase snippets of potential clients whispering how perfect his closets are organized.  Lewis’s hijinks are highly dramatic when his contractors, real estate agents, plumbers, sexy assistants and sub-contractor are nudged to save $25.  During the final episode Lewis appeared to go ballistic when the garage door contractors neglected to remove stickers off the doors (we agree with him.)  And the stakes are high, he can’t let his properties stay on the market for too long.  All of this is a rush that feeds on itself.

We were working in the Hollywood Hills two weeks ago.  A marketing flyer appeared on the steps going up to the house– from Boni Bryant– Lewis’ Los Feliz Realtor.  The flyer showcased Lewis’s for-sale homes, including Ben Lomond (pictured above) and Valley Oak properties.

The show seems to be such a big hit, but why are the houses still for sale?

  • Louis Vuitton Abbesses Messenger Bag

Messenger_bagI am a big believer in quality versus quantity.

Two weeks ago before I caught the flu, I made a huge investment in a messenger bag to use for business and for pleasure.  I’ve talked about the last wallet I owned, and lost, and repurchased.  But this purchase is more significant.

I’ve owned so many briefcases and messenger bags.  My green Diesel went through Italy with me last September and it was that trip that inspired me to upgrade my man bag.

The Louis Vuitton Abbesses Messenger bag does the trick for me.  It’s an organizer’s dream, with an adjustable textile strap and brown canvas lining.  There’s even a cel phone pocket, patch pocket and a D-ring for my keys, but I don’t think I’ll be using that.  And I love the canvas cover, which is super-easy to clean.

I’ve been warned to not carry a laptop in this case, because it’s not designed for that.  And it’s going to be a while before the material softens and loses that ridged feeling.

I feel it’s really important that as an organizer in "Hollywood" I have an appreciation of quality.  Clients have deep attachments to their clothes, shoes and purses.  I know that "things" represent a variety of life’s challenges and triumphs, because I am right there with them– so I get it.

So, have you snagged a bag lately, or anything– that was a big investment but you know you will never be be sorry for laying out the cash?  We want to hear about it!

  • Organizing Work Storage Cabinets – a Short Video

John_trosko_and_joanna_slettenWe have fun video to share from Get Organized Month.

Last January, OrganizingLA joined organizing colleagues from all over Los Angeles in a special 8-hour day of community, productivity training and old-fashioned clutter-clearing to one local non-profit.

The 2006 recipient was The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), a volunteer organization, inspired by Jewish values, that works to improve the quality of life for women, children, and families and to ensure individual rights and freedoms for all through its network of 90,000 members, supporters, and volunteers nationwide.

Ncjw_before_1Ncjw_after_1Our partner for the day, Joanna Sletten, and I worked together to streamline some Help Line office cabinets (click on the before/after pictures above.)  The Help Line room is quite unique:  trained counselors offer guidance and resources to women in crisis, new jobs, coping as a single parent, making a career transition or just needing someone to listen.  We knew the staff and volunteers had little time to keep up systems, so we made them as simple as possible.

Here’s the short video we filmed at the end of the day:

  • OC Register Picks Up OrganizingLA KCBS/KCAL Garage Makeover Post

Ocregister_1The Orange County Register has picked up our exclusive blog article about the Costa Mesa mother who won the KCBS/KCAL Mother’s Day Garage Makeover Contest.  The article, printed in Saturday’s Register, cited the work 8 Los Angeles-area Professional Organizers tackled on April 27th.  OrganizingLA and John Trosko were part of the bunch.

"The professional help picked the [Taffy] Dalby garage bare to the rafters and laid 30 years of memories in the driveway. They boxed up and labeled the thousands of razors, Famous Amos cookies and handwritten letters for care packages. Three trucks from 1-800-Got-Junk came and left, filled to the top.

With the junk gone, there was room for shelves and hooks and order. The Container Store came up with $1,200 worth of supplies. The professionals of NAPO-LA organized. And 10 hours later, they had a garage worthy of any care package assembly line."
