Terry’s Fabrics: Interior Design Insights with John Trosko

This past week Terry's Fabrics, a United Kingdom based fabric and home furnishings store asked me to participate in some trend-forecasting for their "Designer Insights" series. Not only do I choose my top pics of the season, but I talk about my design style and aesthetic, creative process and who inspires my work. I also provided advise for people looking to follow in my footsteps as a professional organizer. Click here to read the interview.

Organizing product trends for 2015

What are the hot new trends for organizing products in 2015? Simple: Everything metallic and copper (storage boxes, suitcases, vessels), trays covered in raffia (for the nightstand, den– anywhere because they're covered in fabric and won't scratch) and chunky open Parson's storage (great for a stylish storage area, family room or small business office).

Hold Everything: Do You Remember William Sonoma Inc.’s Home Organization Store?

It's a shame that the folks behind retail organization store Hold Everything could not get the concept to stick.

The retail store operated from 1983 to 2006 and sold everything from newspaper caddies to stylish de-cluttering books to small furniture to nicer office supplies.

I use their very well-made clear acrylic magazine files on my own desk– which I love. While sitting at my desk one day recently and looking at those files, I wondered where they came from and where they went. As a professional organizer in Los Angeles, I am not only fascinated with consumerism, but with how businesses function. This is what I came up with.

Box Your Bicycle and Become Bespoken

A bicycle may be the most awkward item to store in the home.

There is a whole industry of organized solutions for two-wheelers. From hanging them on the wall with hooks, stands on the floor, pulley systems to hoist. Bikes can also indeed be a safety hazard if they are not properly stored out of garage foot traffic not to mention the little ones looking for adventure. Here is a neat idea a West Hollywood client turned us onto: a folding bike and a custom bike trunk. Purchase them seperately.

Folding Bikes from Brompton:

UK-based Brompton crafts amazing high quality fold-able bikes (30 seconds to fold!). The company ships them to Canada and the United States.

Bike Trunks from Pinel & Pinel:

Pinel & Pinel, a high-end French company (think 1930's ocean liner elegance and usefulness) created these custom bike trunks (and actually, a slew of other amazing trunks on their website– so check them out). Wood and leather combined with nickel and brass plated latches steer your way into organized bike bliss in over 51 colors.

Now we just have to actually use the bike.

Sunny Los Angeles Inspires Organizational Solutions by Henry Road

For a while now we've been following the success of Henry Road, a Los Angeles home and decor boutique overseen by designer Paula Smail.

The small shop located in Studio City just off Ventura Boulevard features Smail's global-inspired color-filled pillows and table textiles supplemented by an eclectic, fun collection of home goods, furniture, organizational solutions and gifts. What grabs you at first are the colors and patterns made right here in the City, perfect for the sunny spaces of Los Angeles– and beyond (they do surely ship). Her inventive use of color and cheerfulness was incorporated not only in her table textiles but in her organizing products.

New Organizing Products Just Announced:

Smail and Company just announced some new items for the summer. We thought we'd bring you a few of the newer organizational solutions and some of their sturdy standbys. With quality comes price, none of these items are inexpensive. But your space is surely going to speak of function and beauty if you choose them. John Trosko Organizes Shoe Lovers for Better Homes & Gardens

Does your personality dictate the way you organize your closet?

Three top organizing experts including Lorie Marrero of the Clutter Diet (Austin, Texas), Meryl Starr (New York, New York) and yours truly answer this question by addressing three different "closet personalities" in the November issue of Better Homes and Gardens.

The 6-page article (pages 78-86) features advice tailored to women who either fold or hang their clothes or a woman with shoes on center stage. Along with our friends at Closet Maid, Hanger City, the Container Store, Organize.com, Caldrea, KangaRoom Storage, OrganizeIt, Hammocks and High Tea, Agraria Home and Elizabeth W, our segment "Shoe Lover" ticked off ideas for maximizing the passion of a "shoe hog" while minimizing the clutter. Luxury Storage Boxes for Your Precious Pumps

Sometimes we discover an organizing product so great we drop everything to tell you about it…

If you're looking for a higher-end shoe storage system with advanced "shoe-vue technology", drop what you're doing and get on over Brazilian designer's Gracienne website for her Clearly Glam shoe storage boxes.

Hollywood Variety's Stylephile profiled them today, which means the boxes are flying off the virtual shelves. It doesn't hurt that the designer's clients include Fergie, Jennifer Aniston, Paris Hilton and Demi Moore. A quick inquiry to the Blast boutique in Beverly Hills was welcomed with a big question mark. But they're sure calling Gracienne to inquire about the boxes.

Not a bad idea to have shoe stores carry storage systems for their customers. What do you think about it? Stylephile says the boxes are made out recycled PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) and they're priced affordably at $9.95/each in packages of 12. Lids are midnight black with a classic designer logo.
