  • Los Angeles Seniors: Downsizing, Organizing, Handicap Remodeling or Relocating

    Betty White

Actress Betty White is an extraordinary example of growing older and more elegant in Hollywood. But what if having your own harem is not quite your style yet you still want to be surrounded by the things you love, on your own terms?

When Robert and Anne bought their sprawling San Fernando Valley family home thirty years ago, their plan was to live through retirement in this home.

They had furnished their home with refurbished antiques acquired from their many trips together. It was one of their cherished antique coffee tables that Robert tripped over, breaking his hip.  Now with his return from the hospital in a wheelchair, the overwhelming task of making their home accessible for Robert’s wheelchair and safe for both of them faced Anne.

Remodeling for wheelchair access, clearing clutter, managing paper files, organizing home furnishings and daily living items or downsizing and relocating to a smaller living area are monumental tasks that are many times thrust on senior home owners.  Sometimes the need to do this is brought on by injury or age related illness. Home and yard maintenance can become a daunting chore for even the healthiest of seniors, requiring them to make a downsizing decision.

There is a large and growing industry of specialists who understand these challenges of elderly homeowners and are ready and willing to help with remodeling, organizing or the sale of the home and with the move to a new location.

A professional organizer provides skills in making the home safe and manageable. Relocating furniture, removing hazards such as electrical cords, throw rugs, heavy objects on shelves that might fall are some of the ways they make a home more senior friendly.  Our company, OrganizingLA, specializes in helping Los Angeles-area seniors part with items that clutter or have no valued use, so to make rooms less crowded or to make ready for a move to a smaller living space.

Handicap remodeling services and senior safety services offer help in adding wheelchair ramps and widening doorways. Bathrooms are made more accessible and safe, with hand rails, walk-in bath facilities and easier access to toilets.

If moving to a smaller retirement home or care facility is the best solution there is another senior specialty provider to call on called a Seniors Real Estate Specialist.

The Senior Real Estate Specialist concentrates more on a complete service package for the sale of the property and/or the purchase of a new living arrangement. The specialist also arranges for the services of a relocation specialist or Senior Move Manager to provide a complete, stress-free package for the elderly homeowner.

A move often requires downsizing and getting rid of a tremendous number of acquired possessions. The relocation specialist or Senior Move Manager, as they are often called, will typically provide a turnkey operation that includes assessing and identifying items to keep, arranging for auction or other disposal, cleaning the home, moving the belongings and setting up the new residence. The manager may also work closely with a real estate agent to arrange for the sale of the home and may also be involved in the financial transactions necessary to move into a new living arrangement.

All the help available to seniors may in itself be overwhelming.  How do seniors choose the right service provider for their needs?  How do they know they will hire someone qualified, responsible and honest?  Area Agencies on Aging and State Better Business Bureaus are good resources to check out available service providers.

Family, friends and religious leaders can be valuable resources to seniors in referring service providers and helping to manage the hiring and supervision. We are also here to help.

The National Care Planning Council’s website www.longtermcarelink.net provides educational articles and information on eldercare providers throughout the nation including Southern California.

  • Quirky Los Angeles Homes: A Treasure Trove or Carefully Curated Clutter?

    House of David

This week's listing of Norwood Young's infamous "House of David" in Hancock Park reminds how much we love professional organizing the colorful spaces of Los Angeles.

Rumored to be the former house of Nat King Cole, L.A Curbed perhaps describes the house better than anyone can:

"The [House of David in Hancock Park] exists outside the normal boundaries of space, time, and interior decorating. There are fake dogs everywhere, the dining room furniture is invisible and hanging from the ceiling, and there are either oversized chairs in the foyer or the foyer is tiny. The house has seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and 19 David replicas  on its front lawn. R&B singer Norwood Young has lived, decorated, and pissed off the neighbors on Muirfield Street since the nineties…"

L.A. is indeed a city of excess, big quirky houses chocked full of surprising treasures, movie locations, world-class architects and people breaking every rule in the book when it comes to aggressive collecting, designing and decorating. We are bound to client confidentiality but we can say it's an honor to not only take a peek at secret spaces but to curate each item and ensure collectibles can be displayed, cared for, or neatly stored for easy access– and do our best to continue the "theme" of the house and to celebrate the life of our clients.

Here are a few of the unusual quirky residences in Los Angeles. You are in for a treat. Read on…

  • Shame on the Producers of A&E’s Storage Wars For Telling One Side of the Story

    Storage Wars Spike TV A & E

We often discuss with organizing clients the pros and cons of putting personal possessions into paid warehouse storage.

In our opinion, it's only a win-win when the relationship is short in situations such as:

    • Home Construction: You're involved in a home renovation (and need to clear the house so workers can kick up construction dust);
    • Working out of State: You're leaving to go out of state or the country (many folks in Hollywood work overseas for film and music projects for extended periods of time and rent out their homes);
    • Quick Home Sale: In-between living arrangements (our current economy has created some tricky relocation scenarios

    Storage Wars Premieres on A&E:

Alg_storage_wars_dotsons Storage Wars is a new disturbing A&E produced reality program chronicling four tough guys on a California road show searching for gold, fine paintings, valuables, collectibles and treasures in storage units where the owners have fallen on hard times and have had to abandon the units through repossession. The Producers have chosen to focus on these ruff-and-tuff men (one of them, Dan Dotson, is feature left), licking their chops, working towards the American Dream and portraying them as brave and noble "saving" or "rescuing" the stuff.

We agree with Kevin McDonough, entertainment critic for South Coast Today of South Coast, Massachusetts. McDonough doesn't appreciate unbalanced treatment either:

""Storage War$" offers not a nanosecond of reflection on the fate of the people whose possessions are looted in this legal but entirely predatory fashion. It's rather interesting — to use a kind word — for A&E to treat the victims of recent hard times as so much roadkill and make heroes and TV stars out of the vultures who close in for the deal."

And to top it off, The New York Daily News, does acknowledge these treasure hunters as definitely not warm and fuzzy, but they're doing work they love and searching for the American Dream. Shame on the Producers for only talking about these so-called "heroes." They need to interview the victims who have lost the ownership and gain a more balanced view.

We just think this is wrong to prey on people who have fallen on hard times whether or not the owners are wasting money on useless storage facilities. What do you think?

  • Experimental Reality Show Takes Away Clutter From Contestants

      Jill Pollack

We had a conversation the other day with a professional organizing client.

The stuff in our home and office, in our closets, basements, pantries, desktops and garages tells a story of who we are. Sometimes that stuff gets in the way of hopes and dreams (and let's be honest, sometimes it may serve us well). So the question is, "What would happen if your house burned down, or someone magically hauled everything away while we were in dreamland, sleeping safely in your bed?" Interesting conversation indeed. Sometimes we wonder the same thing.

HGTV Canada Filming has begun for HGTV Canada's "Consumed." Designed as "Survivor" for clutter – 13 families will play part in an experiment of less stuff, less clutter for 30 days. They will live with pared down belongings while cameras film their progress of what their lives will be like with less.

HGTV is flying Los Angeles-based Professional Organizer Jill Pollack up to Mainland to oversee the decluttering. Families will receive Pollack's assistance, coaching and leadership during the process. If they "survive" the 30-day clutter-less challenge, the families will get the opportunity to take a cold, hard look at their home and habits and to review the stored-up clutter making final decisions to keep, recycle, donate, or dispose.

Show Host Pollack is a former television producer turned organizing pro. Her consulting clients include Desperate Housewives actresses Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman, actress and poker champion Jennifer Tilly and the late Brittany Murphy. Pollack has a Bachelors in Psychology from Columbia University and a Masters in Journalism from NYU. Sounds like the perfect person to lead the experiment.

So readers, in the absence of clutter, what opportunities do you see for positive change? We'd love to hear your thoughts below.

  • How to Easily Avoid “Attack of the Killer Spiders” by Reducing Clutter

    Clutter and spiders

Hollywood has a long history of monster movies featuring giant bugs and insects.

Starship Troopers, Them, and The Wasp Woman are just a few of those Tinseltown jewels. 1977's Kingdom of the Spiders features William Shatner battling carnivorous spiders. But as we all know, Hollywood bases their fiction on real events… as in this story from this week's Sacramento Press.

"Spiders, long a favored subject of sci-fi movies and horror novels, seem to provoke an especially strong yuck factor in humans. Although we know on an intellectual level that they have many beneficial purposes in the eco-system, including eating other insect pests, most of us don’t want them in our kids’ bedrooms.

Now that warm weather has arrived, spiders are proliferating outdoors and often making their way into our homes."

The story points out that various spiders usually hang out in different California regions. A deadly spider, brown recluse, resides in the Southern United States but not generally in California. There's some comment in the piece about spiders being transported via moving vans into Los Angeles. A cousin of the brown recluse, the South American native Loxosceles laeta, has been spotted in Los Angeles County.

What can you do about spiders?

It is important to keep areas around your home (and office) free of clutter and debris. Get rid of the clutter and you'll gain control over a spider population because they reside in the mess. Remove the items, boxes, papers, clothing on floor. Seal up cracks and crevices and clean the corners where spiders may get in. Periodically move materials and furniture and vacuum garages, basements and living spaces. Keep debris, firewood, construction materials and stones outside your home. By following these suggestions and turning to the appropriate pest control experts when necessary will not only keep you organized, but will create a healthy home for you and your family.

There is more help on the internet, just Google "spider control" and you'll find additional resources.

Do you have any spider control regime tips or stories to share with our readers? Let us know.
