  • American Pickers Celebrates Hoarders With NO Judgement

    American Pickers TV billboard

This "American Gothic"-themed 'American Pickers' billboard sprouted up Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard in 2010.

We're impressed and obsessed with American Pickers, the History Channel-television show chronicling Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz not for their professional organizing skills, decluttering dilemmas, predatory storage wars or extreme hoarding clean-ups, but rather for the search of "picker heaven" — highly unusual, re-saleable collectibles they can buy wholesale, fix up, and resell for profit in their stores.

    American pickers laurel and hardy

Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz of 'American Pickers' discover Laurel and Hardy Hollywood memorabilia somewhere in a dusty midwestern barn.

Mike and Frank scour through mid-west and southern state homes, barns, basements, outhouses and warehouses– wherever there are old bikes, road signage, soda fountains, Laurel and Hardy memorabilia, film posters, old toys and abandoned White Castle buildings. They're not  interested in opening a museum, this is inventory for Antique Archaeology, their two stores located in LeClaire, Iowa and Nashville, Tennesee.

What is surprising about the show is how they treat the collection's owners– with celebration, heart, respect and intelligent deal-making. We don't think we've ever seen a judgemental look or conversation that would be considered negative. It's refreshing! That's why so many people open up their homes and collections to the show.

  • What Are The 25 Most Organized Cities In America?

    Los Angeles Skyline

Los Angeles tied for number 7 in a survey for the most organized cities in America. How did your town rate?

While most of our work is concentrated in Los Angeles, it's really fun to travel and see professional organizing clients outside of the city, or in other states.

Part of the enjoyment of traveling is to hear folks talk about how much they love their city, or the town they grew up in. Until now, we've never heard anyone talk about how organized their city is though.

Doxo,  A Seattle-based digital document company just released their list of the Most Organized Cities in America. The doxo Organization Index (dOI) ranks major U.S. cities based on a number of organization factors including:

While Boston hit the number one spot, residents of the Sunshine and Golden States should have a rosy outlook this spring, with three cities in both Florida and California cities making the top 10. Los Angeles tied for 7th place with San Francisco. How did your city rate?

  • Hold Everything: Do You Remember William Sonoma Inc.’s Home Organization Store?

    Hold Everything Organization Store

It's a shame that the folks behind retail organization store Hold Everything could not get the concept to stick.

The retail store operated from 1983 to 2006 and sold everything from newspaper caddies to stylish de-cluttering books to small furniture to nicer office supplies.

I use their very well-made clear acrylic magazine files on my own desk– which I love. While sitting at my desk one day recently and looking at those files, I wondered where they came from and where they went. As a professional organizer in Los Angeles, I am not only fascinated with consumerism, but with how businesses function. This is what I came up with.

  • Professional Organizer Has Lunch With Alleged Bank Robber

    Hollywood Clapboard

This is one unusual story you'd think would come from out here in Hollywood: It involves a Professional Organizer, a bank robber, the FBI, an innocent lunch date, and an elderly woman "crossing the street."

The Dayton (Ohio) Daily News is reporting a story of Professional Organizer Lori Firsdon working for, and having lunch with, an alleged bank robber.

Lori Firsdon Lori Firsdon (pictured here, left), heads Cenvertille-based Forte Organizers, a residential and business organizing and professional speaking firm.

Firsdon was hired recently by 42-year old Eric Morgan to organize Morgan's friend. Firsdon was paid a total of $900 to organize the friend's paperwork clutter– was "led to believe" Morgan "had come into some money and simply wanted to help his friend out." How sweet. The group of three (Morgan, Firsdon, and the friend) enjoyed lunch courtesy of Morgan to celebrate the completion of the office organization project.

“I had lunch with a bank robber. Oh my,” Firsdon said.

Investigators are thinking Morgan paid Firsdon between a series of bank robberies in Blanchester, Milford and Sabina and a Wells Fargo Bank in Navasota, Texas. Presumably the funds used to pay Firsdon for the organizing job were paid for by the bank robbery.

    “He was the perfect gentleman…”

Firsdon, who is an active member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and NAPO-Ohio, noted that prior to lunch she witnessed Morgan help an elderly disabled woman from her car into a restaurant.

Will Firsdon Be Able To Keep Her Consulting Money?

Firsdon contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation last Wednesday. She was told she "may be able to keep the money Morgan paid her" if he is found guilty (as he will be responsible for the debt).
