  • DJ ATB Can Organize His Desktop In a Song

    DJ ATB

Hailing from Germany, DJ ATB (aka Andre Tanneberger) is a talented DJ, musician and producer of electronic dance music. On his Facebook page today, ATB snapped the shot above of him in his office and quipped "this is my real desktop. Disarranged as always." We think he can do better.

If DJ ATB is listening (and you really never, ever know), we'd suggest these quick office organizing tips. He should…

    1. Remove anything that isn't office-related.
    2. Snag appropriate containers to cull small or large items.
    3. Separate items into general categories (electronics, supplies, cords, paper, etc.)
    4. Label all (like he did with his binders behind his desk).
    5. Spend time each day (or better yet) each week to maintain the new system.
    6. Continue reviewing, tweaking and purging as the year goes on.

If you're still not sure who DJ ATB is, check out his very popular song I Don't Wanna Stop. He filmed it in various Los Angeles locales, including Mulholland Drive and Julius Shulman's photographed modernist masterpiece above the San Fernando Valley.

  • Do You Really Accomplish Anything Putzing Around The House?

     Runyon Canyon Park Bench

My wonderful father is a big "putzer." He can spend the entire day in the garage doing what seems to amount to nothing. He can rinse and repeat the putzing in his large garden, the shed, the long driveway up to our rural family home, not to mention his hobby of learning computers.

But I am not really making fun of Dad (seriously, nor do I dare, he's a amazing man), because I think on a smaller scale, I do the same. I don't know if putzing means you just want to be by yourself, it feels therapeutic, or maybe in my case, you feel great satisfaction from doing little things that amount to something. I've never asked Dad why he does it, nor would he care to discuss it, seriously.

For those that do not know, Urban Dictionary defines "putzing" as fooling about, tinkering, messing with, tooling around and dabbling. Some people claim that nothing would ever get done if it were not for putzing.

Experts that specialize in time management say you cannot accomplish anything if you don't concentrate on specific project chunks. Another words, nothing gets finished if you're tinkering. We're not so sure of that.

So are you a putzing kind of person? Is putzing a waste of time? Or do you contribute to the greater good? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

  • Wondering How to Plan Your Storage? Take a Cruise

    Crossroads of the world

One of our organizing clients has an office at Crossroads of the World in Hollywood.

    Crossroads of the world 2

The art deco moderne complex was designed by Robert V. Derrah in 1936 and is often referred to as the first modern shopping center in America.  Various old world cottage bungalows surround one large center building created to resemble a streamline ocean liner.  How cool is that?

Crossroads of the world 3 It's no wonder streamline created such a design influence, even to this day.  Below in the black and white picture, you can see how the period inspired this West Hollywood-area streamline duplex home.  The home still stands today, we used to walk past it everyday.

Much of 1930s design was borrowed from the golden age of transportation, especially ocean liners.  Ocean liners have long been a source of fascination, not only in their beauty but in their functionality.  A transatlantic voyage in the 1930's and today's "sea cities" have much in common– tight, functional storage for adventurous passengers.

    Streamline_duplex

During the Golden Age of Travel in the 1930s, transatlantic voyagers captured the allure of distinctively designed passenger cabins:  rich woods, fine linens, shiny brass fixtures, flawless service– all in a postage-sized space with concealed cabinetry, floor-to-ceiling and petite fixtures, this professional organizer's daydream!

Modern day travelers planning a small space can take a design clue from the past and book a voyage on today’s cruise ships.  A shrewd use of space and efficiency where high-style and beauty meet functionality hasn’t really changed in over 60 years.  The principles are still the same.

Let us know about your small-space adventures.  Have you ever traveled on a cruise ship? Was the storage functional (and beautiful) enough for you?

  • Want To Get Organized? Eat Chocolate And Chicken

ChocolateCan eating certain foods really help you get organized?  It is possible?

Getting (and staying) organized is about decision making.  When you're holding an item in your hands, you take responsibility for the care and feeding of that item, just like a pet.  You also choose to put it down right in front of you, or put it back in its proper place.

CisforchocolateStudies are showing that running low on the neurotransmitter that controls your mood (serotonin) contributes to "low energy, lack of enthusiasm, and regulating emotions."  That's one of the reasons why someone who is depressed actually feel better when they eat, or at least less cranky.  Now that's a simplistic solution, but you get the point.

Do you feel more motivated to tackle your desk paperwork after you've had a meal?  Or a piece of chocolate?  Try it and share your "scientific" experience.
