Never Too Soon To Start Packing

It’s been duly noted in Los Angeles folklore that at one time or another, everyone has lived, or has known someone that has lived "off Sweetzer."

The beautiful, 1930’s-era, 3-story apartment buildings and bungalows located in West Hollywood (and near the new City Hall) house entertainment creatives, interior designers, fashionistas and artists. Over 38,000 people live in this 1.9 square mile city, the second largest concentration of people outside of Manhattan.

Saturdays and Sundays on the street are a not-so-careful and hurried orchestration of moving vans, orange parking cones, double-parked cars, tape guns, packing blankets, wardrobe boxes as well as front lawn tag sales– all sorts of Angelinos moving in or moving out while they move up or down our social ladders.

Guys and Galleys: How Men Organize The Kitchen
It's hard to pin down time to get an entire room organized.

But for a room most of us spend time in– the kitchen– it's surprising how little time we spend keeping it all in check. Here's a terrific example of some of our work, circa 2005.

By starting small, you'll find new organizers will work so well in the galley cabinet that you'll want to try sequels in other rooms. It's a perfect ending to clutter with a limited time investment. Expandable stairstep shelf organizer at the Container Store. The 1930's yachting sugar canisters were from the owner's personal collection and discovered on eBay.

Excellent Systems to Clear the Clutter

If you are inclined to spend time clearing the clutter, I would first suggest introducing brightness into dark, cramped spaces. And, if you are working in a garage or a closet, play some lively music to make it fun. Believe it or not, I encourage all my Southern California Clients tune into K-EARTH 101. Dress comfortably. Have plenty of water on-hand. Don’t work on an empty stomach, but do it with a positive frame of mind. Work in short periods of time and always reward yourself for your accomplishments.

OrganizingLA Tip: Vroom Vroom– Make Some Room

Bookshelves overrun by CDs and DVDs? Make your room vroom with binders designed to hold your disks and movie title notes as featured on Tuesday evening’s Queer Eye. But where did Thom Felicia find the binders? Case Logic has a terrific leather 80-capacity binder in black leather. Personally, I’d suggest a splurge, try: Aspinal of London, they have delicious and funky soft suede leather binders that look beautiful and feel amazing with padded covers and lined in luxurious silber-grey Moiré silk. My personal fave: Cobalt Blue. Just add CD inserts from Office Depot and you’ve made your bookshelves breath again.

OrganizingLA Tip: Charitable Donations

As a Los Angeles-area Professional Organizer, I've been using the amazing ItsDeductible software from TurboTax and just recently introduced the system to my Clients as an added bonus.

I use it to account for each and every item donated to thrift stores as we clear the clutter. It automatically values your donations using a simple method: the established guidelines from the IRS. Press print, and a simple report pops out with the item name, value (good, fair, etc.) and the price. How simple is that?

Who would have thought that Uncle Sam values your unbeloved Stock Pot at $26 bucks and that unheard Russian Rapsody two-setter you bought in 1989 at $16?

Save time. Save on taxes. Stop guessing.
