  • Buckets and Bucket Shelving from Pottery Barn

    Metal_pails

Today, we discovered these terrific wall-mounted pails in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog.

The galvanized metal hides dirt, and withstands dragging or dropping (for the most part) making these ideal for kid’s toy, art supplies and game storage.  We’d use them for Legos, Barbie dolls or beanie babies.  Comes in red, navy, light green or light pink.  What’s so neat is that the buckets can be personalized with a name or message, up to 12 characters.

Can you see these buckets in another room in the house, besides the kid’s room?  How would you use them?

  • How to Organize a Playroom – Leave It Be?

    Hollywoodhigh_1

Last Christmas, I gleefully sat on a friend’s living room floor playing with his young nephew.  Together, for what seemed like hours, we constructed some wonderfully complicated Lego toys together (no, it wasn’t as elaborate as the Griffith Observatory scene above.)

Yesterday, I caught Laura’s most touching and short (600 word) essay about her young son’s passion for his toy pirates, which are carefully placed all over his bedroom floor.  Laura’s maternal need for structure and organized chaos in her home is battling with her young son’s desire for creative innocence.  If your’re raising a family, can you dig?

"Everything to do with pirates resides on [my son’s bedroom] floor. I can’t walk through [those pirates]…I can’t walk around them…in fact I can barely get in the door. You see, although it might look like a mess to you (and to me), my son has all those pirates strategically placed…"

"Oh yes, those pirates all over the floor, they can definitely stay because as long as the pirates are around I stand a chance of holding onto my little boy for just a little while longer."

Laura over at Organizing Junkie has a terrific site where the Canadian Christian mother pushes her passion for raising a family, and keeping her home in one piece.  She is not quite as insane as Amy’s Blog, though.  It’s fun seeing how Laura hacks her dollar-store bargains and what recipes she whips up in her crock pot.

We just had to share this with you.  The post reminds me of the days when I played LEGO— voraciously.  The hours and hours I sat on my floor building skyscrapers and castles.  It’s a wonder I never became an architect.  I think some rainy day Saturdays I ate and drank LEGO.  How fun.

Laura is smart to let her son go overboard.  And how generous he is to allow her to vacuum every two weeks!

  • Stylish Footwear Storage Doubles As Art?

    Footprint_pink

We found these through Danielle de Lange’s Style Files blog.

Part art, part organization– a great modular shoe storage system.  Wall-mounted, they’re available in pink, powder blue and white powder coated steel.

For some home organizing clients, we can see them:

    • In the contemporary home’s entryway
    • In the traditional cabana
    • In a master closet where the closet width is an issue and shoe storage is needed
    • Poolside, holding complimentary flip-flops for your guests

Most of all, they get the damn shoes off the floor.

  • Photography Tips for Treasured Objects

Creating_keepsakes_magazine_1When organizing clients have objects they just can’t live without, but absolutely have no plan to use, display or store the item, we suggest they take a picture and create an album.  Some like it, some respectively decline.

Last November’s Creating Keepsakes Magazine, takes us to that place– taking pictures of your treasures so the memories can last forever, and their stories can be documented.

Scrapbooking_suppliesDo you have jewelry, awards, family bibles, or flatware– heirlooms in your family you can’t fit physically into a scrapbook?  Why not take pictures and how off your treasured objects in their best light?

Photographing treasured objects is only the beginning of capturing your family history, without all the clutter.

  • Hotel Boxes – The Next Wave of Shoe Storage?

    Hotel_box

A 10-foot tall tower of organized clutter?

San Francisco Professional Organizer Jeri Dansky noted today on her blog (click here to see Jeri’s blog) a fun article in the SF Chronicle about the next wave of shoe organizers.

Box_cabaret_1The chic "Hotel Boxes" come in a variety of colors including "French Miami," "Snow Queen," "White Blonde" and "Caberet," (pictured, left).  They’re from Denmark, come unassembled in plastic folio, and they stack up to 10′ high.  You can use them for shoes, small electronics, cosmetics, etc.  We love that they keep dust out, a big problem.

Lilian Adler and Soren Berg, the makers, claim the boxes have superman strength, strong enough to use as a side table.

For $25 bucks, they’re an investment, and we can definitely use them with some fashionista clients here in Los Angeles.  But knock-offs are sure to happen, probably with less quality and cheap materials.  So grab an original now.
