  • Donald Trump Tours His Trump Tower Office and You Won’t Believe What We Find

    Donald Trump Desk

Presidential candidate Donald Trump shows off his desk papers

Ask any professional organizer what an organized office looks like and you'll generally get the same answer:

    "Whatever works for the client."

And that's true for my professional organizing firm, too. If something's not broke, then there's no need to fix it. But while some clients don't need any desk or office organization, many need a complete overhaul or at least some selective help with things like desktop organization, digital organizing, office memorabilia, old-school paper management, dealing with scanning, business card collections, storing architectural drawings, household files, business filings and tax records.

Again, if it's not broke, then there no need to fix it.

    Trump Office Tour

Case in point, Donald Trump. The Republican Presidential candidate proudly and rightfully shows off his Trump Tower business offices. In this Wall Street Journal interview, Trump shines when he surrounds himself with his vast memorabilia. We think he handles the opening comments well when Journalist Monica Langley opens up the conversation with the opening line "This office is all you. And it's a little bit junky." Check out the interview video from September 2015:

From The Desk of Donald Trump:

Some clients just love to surround themselves with the things they love, and the totality of those items creates a powerful emotion. But it's a fact that Trump also believes that a messy desk is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it's a part of his success. Check out this fascinating interview from 2011.

Here is a transcript of Trump's desktop philosophy. If you need the desk interview link, click here.

“Many people have been asking about my desk, and the fact that I have so many papers on my desk. It’s actually very neat. I know where everything is. But if you look around, I mean, there’s a lot of stuff. The fact is, I’m busy. I always notice that busy people, people that are very successful in many cases, have a lot going on on their desk. I have papers from deals, I have papers from just about everything. I like to read up on things. I like to study what I’m doing. So, therefore, you have a lot of action going on your office. Now, some of the writers, some of the ones that aren’t so smart, they talk about the desk negatively. They say, “Oh, isn’t it terrible, Trump has so many papers on his desk, let’s analyze everything on the desk,” and they do the best, and they fail. But the fact is, I’ve noticed over the years, successful people have a lot going on on their desk. My desk is in my office, my desk is a very important part of me, and frankly it’s a very important part of my success. Everything I do comes right through this desk. So, if it’s not perfectly neat, if there’s a lot of action, I think that’s okay. I actually think that’s a good thing.”

Big Bang's Mayim Bialik seems to be happy to have hired a Professional Organizer; her results really opened her eyes.  (photo)

We don't think we've ever seen someone write about their celebrity organizing experience like Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik wrote about recently.

Best known for her lead role in the 1990s NBC sitcom Blossom, as well as her current role as Amy Farrah Fowler on CBS' The Big Bang Theory, Mayim really, really opened up on Kveller, a Jewish parenting blog and you've got to see this.

  • Julia Roberts Kicks Mental and Emotional Clutter to the Curb; Discovers a “Lightness in Life”

    Julia Roberts Reuters

Mother of two and Actress Julia Roberts has discovered one of life's great lessons: having less leads to simple happiness.

Has America's sweetheart Julie Roberts successfully kicked clutter to the curb?

One of the techniques we help our Los Angeles professional organization clients past their frustration with clutter is to envision what the mountain of mess will look like AFTER we're done. So each and every decision they make contributes to the outcome. It's about looking past the small projects, enjoying them while looking forward to the outcome.

In an interview this week with Us Magazine, mother-of-two and actress Julia Roberts seems to be taking downsizing advice very seriously (in her head at least) and is focusing not too much on the "detail" but on the "lightness of being." What else does Roberts have to say?

"It's about non-grasping, non-hoarding, cleaning out your closet, dusting out your mind and letting go of the things that weigh you down mentally and emotionally," she explained. "There's a lightness to my life now — an airy quality of not taking things too seriously. That's happiness"

We always enjoy highlighting media stories featuring celebrities and prominent people, and especially in this case, when you can witness their successful transformation and gleam some insight into the anti-clutter process. For more stories we've featured, check out our celebrity organizing category.

    Your Turn To Comment

What do you think about Roberts successful outcome for her decluttering efforts? Have you undertaken a home or office organizing project and struggled to finish? How do you keep your eyes on the big picture? Do you find a clearer mind a result of a less cluttered closet? We'd love to hear your thoughts. • Kelly Ripa & Mark Conseulos Quibble About Clutter – Who’s Right?

Kelly-Ripa-Mark-Consuelos New York City Apartment No Clutter

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are selling their "cluttered" NYC Apartment

Over the past 10 years we've operated our Los Angeles-based professional organizing company, one thing is clear: couples quibble about clutter.

We've written about clutter and couples for a long time:

    The Vanity Fair Inverview

That's why it was no surprise when an OrganizingLA blog reader forwarded tv talk show host Kelly Ripa and husband-actor Mark Consuelos recent interview for Vanity Fair. Ripa and Consuelos argue about what stays and what goes, while they're downsizing and packing up their New York City apartment. In the Vanity Fair interview, Ripa says:

“It is a bit of a nightmare, because Mark likes to throw everything away, and I want to save everything for when the kids are older one day,” Ripa said. “So, you know, they have their things, like their first report card, so it’s a constant struggle as to what we should toss versus what we should save.”

Vanity Fair mentions that the couple, married now for 18-years, still have an entire closet filled with baby and children’s things that their three kids have outgrown. It's no surprise to us, because we've written before about Ripa's passion for shopping.

“For some reason, I have a crib and a stroller and a Pack ’n Play, and a little kitchen,” Ripa said, laughing. “Right now, basically, David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris’s kids come over and play with everything. Like, that’s what it’s there for, just to get them to bring the kids over.”

You can see pictures of their listed apartment here. Or, check out the Vanity Fair interview here.

    Your Turn To Comment

What do you think about Ripa's passion for keeping things for her children, or Consuelos need to make space? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Let us know what you think here in the comment section or you can tweet us @johntrosko on Twitter. You can also check us out on Instagram (@johntrosko).

  • Rockstar Rod Stewart Revels in Model Railroads, Obsessively Detailed Yet Hidden From Sight

    Rod Stewart Singer Beverly Hills

You'd never now it from this picture, but singer Rod Stewart built a very organized, highly detailed model train city in his Beverly Hills mansion

I was really fascinated with model train sets when I was a kid. My parents in Princeton NJ had a converted basement and on top of a pool table my father installed a thick piece of wood that allowed me and my brothers to go crazy with whatever hobby we desired or any school project we endeavored. But when I got older, space was a limitation in small Los Angeles apartments I rented so I really gave up the idea of a hobby that I needed a lot of space for– trains.

So it was really surprising to find out that Rock Star Rod Stewart has a secret obsession that you won't read about in Architectural Digest: he loves trains.

Railroad aficionado, Rod Stewart would return to his hotel room on tour and dive into hours of painstaking model scratch-building and detail work.
