Mikhail Baryshnikov Dances His Way Through Decluttering

World-class dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and his wife Lisa Rinehart have learned that in order to move forward with life, you must get rid of the past.

Believe it or not, Mikhail Baryshnikov celebrated his 64th Birthday in January.

Absolutely a visionary, he is known as one of the greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century, crossing cultural platforms of art, high society and passion for life– serving as principal dancer, artistic director, a promoter of modern dance, dramatic actor, Academy Award nominee, and, in the the final season of HBO's Sex in the City, starred as the secretive, sexy Russian Artist Aleksandr Petrovsky who woos Carrie Bradshaw into moving to Paris.

Decluttering the closets:

But it seems that in the "last half of life" Baryshnikov and his wife have found something very fulfilling and possibly the key to everlasting creativity and reinvention: decluttering his closets.

"In the second part of life you get rid of stuff you've accumulated. Every few months my wife [Lisa Rinehart] and I clean up the closet and go to the Salvation Army with big bags of clothes. I gave away hundreds of VHS tapes to Russian libraries. I'm more interested in what I'm doing now, so these things are almost in the way. But I cannot give away books."
