  • How To Organize The Office Supplies

    How to organize the office

    This week, Staples-owned Quill.com rolled out Dunder Mifflin paper, an actual physical product based on the popular NBC television show The Office.

    For $34.99, you can purchase up to three reams of paper (any quantities over that the price jumps to $39.99.) The Hollywood Reporter notes that the licensing deal with NBCUniversal is set for two-years and as part of the agreement the company will get approximately 6% of revenue.

    Recent statistics show that paper sales have been down about 3% each year for the past few years due to emails and the Internet. Are we getting closet to the paper-less society?

    Formerly starring Steve Carell, the show is a mockumentary, depicting the everyday lives of office employees in a Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

  • Hollywood Set Decorators Use Clutter to Give Substance to Characters

    Nick & Nora Flannel Cloud Sheets Bedding
    Years ago I fell in love with the cloud bedding from Nick & Nora when I saw the items featured in an independent movie.

    Sadly, I can't remember the name of the movie now, but I do remember becoming obsessed with finding the flannel bed sheets I saw in several dream sequences. I pictured myself living the same dreamy perfect life that the sheets were portrayed in. In attempting to locate the store I hit the Internet 1.0 circa 2000 (not a good place to dig deep and find information back then). And at the time, I did not realize I subtly being influenced by the media.

  • Do Not Allow Halloween Clutter To Gobble Up Your November

    Sterilite orange storage boxIf your Halloween wasn’t scary enough, it’s time (or actually past time) to start storing those plastic pumpkins, spiders, death masks, witches’ cauldrons, devil pitchforks, skeletons, tombstones, autumnal wreaths and mummies.

    If you still have not yet packed your Halloween decor away, there is still hope.

    Seasonal décor are hard-earned investments and should be protected! If the items are specific to Halloween, they should be culled, organized, boxed, bagged and labeled together as a grouping. Not only will you save time next year, but setting up will be fun and items will be projected from damage.

    Post-Halloween décor organizing tricks:

    • Decide now if you want your decorations color-coded in orange boxes. Color-coding makes sense if you choose a color that communicates the season (and the more you can understand the storage system; the more likely you are to maintain it). Colored plastic storage boxes are available at your local Wal-Mart and Target stores. However, clear bins allow you to see what’s in them without opening the box up and you can always add more. Some clients insist on attached tops so they don’t lose them.
    • Snap pics of your decorations inside and outside as they sit decorating your house (so you’ll remember next year how embellishments were used). Create a “Halloween Deco” photo album online, in your computer, or print the photos out and store with the boxes;
    • Review decorations and costumes for use, damage and over accumulation;
    • Consider donating unused décor to your favorite charity;
    • Completely dry out decorations and make sure items are reasonably clean;
    • Wrap anything sharp and seal with removable blue tape;
    • Use clear “contractor-size” lawn and leaf bags to contain giant-size outdoor décor;
    • Use zippered baggies to contain hardware (label the bags);
    • Remove batteries from animated figures (to avoid corrosion or leakage);
    • Check for frayed wires on the fog machines and electrical units;
    • Make use of cable ties to control unruly cords;
    • Wrap fragile collectibles in packing paper or acid-free tissue;
    • Collect scary music CDs or playlists and place with decorations;
    • Store flammables (matches or lamp oils) away from your décor;
    • Box Halloween plates, serving ware, utensils and trick-or-treating candy bowls with regular décor so everything is together in one place.
    • Use labels on the outside of each box to identify the contents.

    One special trick to know is that these overall suggestions are good for other holidays like Christmas, Easter and 4th of July too.

  • Welcome to OrganizingLA

    For 7 years, we’ve transformed the homes, businesses, small offices and secret spaces of Los Angeles from fabulous messes to spectacular showcases. Join us here as we good-naturedly spill Hollywood’s domestic obsessions and our credence that being organized is better than a weekend at the new Hotel Bel-Air.

  • Fall Into First-Class Organized Habits!

    Hollywood pumpkin los angeles
    We love to remind professional organizing clients that fall is a terrific time to dive into organizational projects, especially the period between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

    With Daylight Savings Time coming to a close and the days getting shorter, everyone can appreciate getting more done in less time with less stress IF you strategize and prioritize, use the right tools and develop first-rate organized habits.

    Here are some tips we share all the time, to help eliminate clutter and create a space surrounded only by the things you need and love.

    Make a Plan:

    Fall is excellent “downtime” season. Use this time to ask these questions: what do I want to get done by year’s end? How will I benefit if I accomplish this project? What are the resources, time and tools I will need?

    Start Small:

    Break bigger projects into smaller manageable tasks—clean out a junk drawer or the coat closet, free up your desktop, clear out your purse or wallet– tasks that can be finished in an hour or less. Transfer the “start small” philosophy into larger traditional problem areas like the garage, office, closet or playroom.

    Categorize:

    Harvest like items with like items in accessible appropriate places. Provide homes in labeled bins and baskets. Donate, repair, recycle, re-sell anything unloved and unwanted.

    Value your Time:

    Even at home, time is a valuable resource. Use a kitchen timer to set up limits for sorting and reviewing. Prioritize tasks to get the most important elements done first so you won’t get distracted from your primary purpose.

    Reward Yourself:

    Following completion, a manicure, massage or a trip to the pumpkin patch are sure-fire simple incentives that encourage us to complete mundane tasks.

    Fall Into Better Behavior:

    Put items away as-you-go. Set time on your calendar to review your new systems (also known as your organizational handiwork) and make changes if necessary. Remember, organization is really about long-lasting adjustments in behavior and not a status realized in one day!

    How would you get into an organized and productive mindset this fall? Tweet your thoughts and challenges to @johntrosko or leave a comment below.
