How To Organize Your Hunting Gear

Living in an urban "oasis" like Southern California takes us away from a popular hobby– hunting.

The closest to hunting some of us will ever get is to drive our Camo Hummer down to the Santa Monica Airport for the annual Barney’s Warehouse Sale.  Bargain hunting galore.  You take your life in your own hands though in the parking lot across the street from Barker Hanger.

But growing up on the East Coast, you had to keep your eyes peeled for real hunters.  And there was the annual take-home, where a large piece of venison would be stuffed into the freezer for our mother to later disguise it as beef, or something we’d surely eat.

But if you are into hunting (or even fishing), you probably realize that all the gizmos and gadgets needed to effectively pursue your hobby could get into the way of having a good time.  Just look at the picture below.  Stores sure make it easy to purchase all that gear, but never show you how to actually store it so you can find it when you need it.

According to The Hunter’s Wife,  a simple series of bins can alleviate the desperate search.  But first, what kinds of hunting supplies need to be organized?  According to the post:

  • hats
  • gloves
  • flashlights
  • GPS units
  • 2-way radios
  • decoys
  • trail markers
  • pouches
  • backpacks,
  • cover scents
  • calls
  • safety harnesses
  • field dressing supplies

When you want to finally get all this organized (and avoid badgering your spouse with questions like "where did you put the decoys, dear?" – use a simple system.  You’ll want to organize various items into departments, purchase some shelving and plastic bins.  Mark the bins with the following names (customize as you see fit):

  • Deer
  • Waterfowl
  • Hats & Gloves
  • Turkey
  • Extra Clothes
  • Totes
  • Bags & Pillows

We can see this system totally working.  Readers— if you hunt, or have someone into hunting, what tips could you provide our readers?

All that gear kind of scares me a little bit… even though I live in “hunting headquarters” we seem to have our share of gadgets and gear… it’s what you get when you love the outdoors.

OK I’m going to try and organize my husbands hunting gear using your recommendations. Over the past 10 years we have acquired so much gear that is it virtually impossible to get into our garage. We also spend money on items we probably have but can’t locate……Wish me luck!!!

It would be better to carry all the necessary things you need for hunting (e.g., your blow gun, satellite phone, clothing, and binoculars) in order not to miss a single shot to earn your trophy. In light of this, those things should be in a secure area in your home. That way, you will know exactly where to locate them if you’re going out hunting.
