Sometime Wednesday, our 100,000th visitor to the OrganizingLA Blog will sign on.  Could it be you?

To party, we’ve mortgaged our house and splurged on a weekend rental of the iconic Hollywood Sign.  Allow us to share our progress report, since we first started collecting stats in November, 2005.

Notice the graph on the left.  Our highpoint last year was our Daily Candy mention.  Following the mention, we experienced a drop.  But our readership has increased ever since, to even higher levels than Daily Candy.  It’s quite thrilling.  Click on the graph to see the real, untouched numbers.

We appreciate you, your support, smart comments, subscriptions and fun suggestions.  We’re so honored that you read everyday, and whenever we can post in-between client appointments.  Thank you for joining us for the ride!

  • How To Organize Your Gift Cards

Reusable_envelope_2If you’re like us, you have tons of gift cards and always forget you have them.

We do store them in a reusable (Velcro closure) envelope, but that doesn’t solve the problem of how much is on each card.

Parent Hacks has a great tip for organizing your gift cards.  Use a sharpie.

"We sharpie the current amounts on each one so we don’t have to fish around for the latest receipt.  Just don’t write $87.22 too big, because you’re likely to have to scratch it out and write $46.13 after your next mini shopping trip."

Maybe you can use the $10,000 Magic Marker to write on the backs?

If you have a tip for organizing gift cards, please dare to share!  Our readers want to hear what you have to say.

  • Video From Our Interview with Scripps Broadcast Group

John provided professional organizer expertise for a Scripps Broadcast Television news piece.  The segment is now available for viewing!

Teaming with OrganizingLA Assistant RD and stalwart Los Angeles client Sherri Lewis, the Hollywood cameras rolled for over 4 hours, just down the street from Paramount Studios.  We interviewed, purged, and organized Sherri’s home office in less than a day, all on camera.  Shopzilla Chief Shopping Expert Helen Malani provided shopping statistics and product suggestions.

You can read our notes from that day’s theatrics (and a fascinating bio of our client) by clicking here.

Shot last March, the "spring cleaning and organizing" segment airs this month in 10 markets across the United States including Phoenix (Arizona), Tampa (Florida), Lawrence (Kansas), Baltimore (Maryland), Detriot (Michigan), Kansas City (Missouri), Cincinnati and Cleveland (Ohio) and Tulsa (Oklahoma).  This video is from WPTV, West Palm Beach.  A full list of stations airing the piece can be found here.

Click below to see the short segment and get some great tips.  Let us know what you think, too.  We love that.

Video courtesy of Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company.

Update 5/2/07:  Some readers have not been able to access the video.  The segment has been set up on YouTube, so it should play.  If not, use this link (click here) to view directly from YouTube.

  • Courtney Love Hopes to Gain Some Closet Space– And a New Lease On Life

    Hollywoodandhighland

I used to have this long-standing joke with a friend who owned a house in the quiet neighborhood of Outpost Estates, just east of Runyon Canyon and above Hollywood.

I convinced him that Courtney Love had moved in next door, and his quiet tree-lined street was about to get busier with all-night parties, loud music, and motorcycles lined up and around his guest house garage.  I had seen a woman who looked a helluva lot like Courtney at the house, and since my friend had never seen his neighbor, my joke was quite successful, at least for a while.

Well, if Courtney did live next door, my friend would probably find it touching to know that Courtney is about to have a sale– not a garage sale, but an auction at Christie’s.  She told Spin.com on Monday that the contents in her home are like a "mausoleum" because her husband (and Nirvana rocker) Curt Colbain, died over 13 years ago.

"My daughter [14-year-old Frances Bean] doesn’t need to inherit a giant Hefty bag full of flannel fucking shirts… A sweater, a guitar, and the lyrics to ‘Teen Spirit’ — that’s what my daughter gets. And the rest of it we’ll just fucking sell."

As with everything, getting rid of the old brings the new– even though it’s closet space:

"I still wear his pajamas to bed. How am I ever going to go form another relationship in my lifetime wearing Kurt’s pajamas?"

Have you ever let go of something substantial in hopes that something new will bless you?  Please join the conversation and enter a comment below.

  • New York Giants Michael Strahan Garage Sale

Michael_strahan_houseIn a move that is probably less about de-cluttering and downsizing and more along the likes of Angela Bassett’s angry character in Waiting to Exhale, we heard today that Jean Strahan, wife of New York Giant’s defensive end Michael Strahan, cleaned house this past weekend.

In some sort of post-divorce feud with her ex-husband, Jean took her case to the public.

Strahan’s wife was only able to pull $6.5 million dollars from him, but that was only partial payment of the $13.5 million the courts gave her as a settlement.  Jason said it was too much and halted the remaining payment.

Thestrahans_3In what seems like a retaliation, Mrs. Strahan threw the doors open to their (her) $3.5 million dollar Montclair, New Jersey home (see picture above, left) for deals of the decade.

Published reports state that she gave $300 dresses away for $20, a set of Michael’s personally-worn gloves for $50, televisions for $50, and picture frames for $2 each.  [Click here to read more in a 2002 NFL.com article for detail about their home, and the labor of love it took to pull the renovation together.]

The couple filed for divorce in 2005.  We don’t advocate having a garage sale selling items from a non-present family member who does not have full knowledge and agreement as to the situation– no matter how bad the feelings are.  These sorts of situations make only for dramatic cinema.
