Recently, I was on a plane from Los Angeles to Philadelphia to visit my family for a summer vacation. The person on the Southwest flight before me left his Washington Post newspaper behind and I read an interesting article on local Washington D.C. College students who started their very own "junk hauling" service.
In 2003, University of Miami student Omar Soliman started College Hunks Hauling Junk on a small scale in Washington, DC as a means for college students to earn money during the summer months. Omar’s Business plan won first prize in the 2004 Rothschild Entrepreneurship Competition, and he has enlisted several College Hunks to provide the manpower necessary to make the business fully operational.
They team up with the local Colleges and Universities to bring reliable, hard-working, clean-cut, and professional workers and service in the hunk-hauling industry. Law students, medical students, undergraduates, and athletes have joined the "College Junk" Team as a means to earn extra money and gain valuable business experience. They donate a portion of revenues from each job to college scholarship funds and work with community service groups to sponsor athletic events for the area’s youth.
